An Article on Endometriosis: Supporting those Suffering
Since becoming an Arvigo® practitioner I have seen quite a few endometrial cases and heard of many more stories of friends and loved ones suffering with endometriosis. From what I observe, it seems endometriosis is occurring in epic proportions here in New Zealand. So why are so many women suffering and what can we do to reverse or at least reduce and manage symptoms? Well, to be fare, doctors aren’t even sure what causes it, nor do they all agree exactly about what it is. Doctors do agree that the issue is both endocrine and immune system related. However, there are also other contributing factors gaining evidence. If we know some of the causes, then we can hopefully prevent and correct the issue. Have a read below on what some of those contributing factors might be and some suggestions to get started restoring one’s health.
Since starting this article, the topic of endometriosis is so vast, I decided to break up this email into several parts. And for those seeking answers now, I’ve included the full newsletter on my website [www.ElizabethsTherapeuticMassage.com]. Here is part 1 of 4.
1. Move stagnation in the pelvic space
Stagnation has set up in the body. Stagnation means blood, lymph, emotions, and/or life force are not flowing optimally. Disease cannot be present where there is flow. Think of the classic Asian example of a river flowing vs. a stagnant pool of water. Over time, especially if in a hot place (like inside the body) the stagnant pool will begin to grow slime and show much evidence of decay. When there are stuck places in the body, it’s easier for stagnation to accumulate, same as when a still pool of water has more breakdown and decomposition. One can think of endometriosis as stagnation manifest in the pelvic space.
When the systems (blood, lymph, life force) can flow, healing can take place, similar to how the flowing water of a river, keeps the channels open and clear. Different than a river, the body actually needs all the different ‘rivers’ of life to be working well which is an area Arvigo® excels at. Arvigo® Therapy assists to gently open the lymph, blood, and energy channels of the body by releasing abdominal scar tissues, lymph congestion, and helping to make sure all the internal organs are in a balanced position inside the body. When the organs are where they are supposed to be the veins, arteries and lymph flows the way they should, thus doing their job more efficiently by removing stagnation and keeping you healthy.
Remember the body always wants to return to a state of internal harmony, called homeostasis. The body sometimes needs a little push and guidance from the outside. Arvigo® therapy is a tool to reduce and eliminate internal stagnations, adhesions, and incorrect internal organ alignments such as with the uterus. For anyone suffering with Endometriosis, please schedule an Arvigo® appointment so I can assist your body’s pelvic structure and make sure the belly and pelvic space has good internal flow.
2. Clean up toxic build up
Chemical and hormonal toxins contribute to endometriosis and must be cleansed out of the body to return to homeostasis. We live in a world full of toxins from our food, water, the air we breath, to the products we use in our daily lives. Toxins are impossible to avoid and they are found everywhere on the planet, even where there are no people as they travel on the wind and rain. However there are things we can do to limit our exposure such as living a green/environmentally conscious lifestyle as much as possible. It’s not as much about saving the planet (though this is great), as it is more about just saving ourselves. Saving the planet becomes a bonus once we’ve sorted ourselves out. Use organic and spray-free as much as possible in BPA free plastic or glass bottles and choose healthier, non-toxic options from everything from food to household cleaners to natural paints to laundry detergent to dishwasher powder to personal hygiene products.
Endometriosis is a sign of too many built up toxins and often estrogen's in the body effecting the endocrine system, which the endocrine system controls a woman’s monthly cycles. If you have endometriosis, I would strongly encourage a thorough detox program. One great product to use is a zeolite called NCD (a product I currently use), by Waiora (www.mywaiora.com/584133), which is especially good for heavy metal removal. Basically zeolite is a powerful clay that soaks up heavy metals. It’s just a few drops a few times a day.
You can also do a 1-month supervised cleanse program to remove the toxic chemicals and old hormone residues in your body. Contact my partner Sam, a holistic chiropractor and acupuncturist who has studied whole-food cleanses for over 15 years for a comprehensive 1-month supervised cleanse, which included dietary and lifestyle advice. Reach him here at http://tenpointwellness.com/contact-2/
3. Use organic hygiene products
Only use Organic, homemade, or other ‘clean’ feminine hygiene products. Ok women and partners of women, let’s have a frank discussion here. The intimate tissues in and around the vagina are some of the most absorptive tissue on the body. What goes on or in or near this part of the body is absorbed right into the blood stream, similar to putting medicines under the tongue for quick and efficient absorption. The intimate tissues are the same. What women use for there personal hygiene can have a BIG impact on health, which means quality does matter and this is often an area women don’t think about too much unless they have outright symptoms with certain products. There are lot’s of healthy options out there to choose from and one of my favorites (I use these personally) is a product called Drion pads. They use cotton that is 100% organic, dioxin free (which is really important) and the pads breath so no bad bacteria over growth or risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome.
Plus, there is the added benefit of Drions from the crushed Tourmaline (a semi-precious stone) of far in-fared energy and negative ions. Both negative ions and far-infrared help move stagnant energy, lymph and blood in the body, which aids healing in issues such as endometriosis or really any painful period. You could also make your own reusable cotton liners, get a moon cup or use specially sourced sea sponges (called Jade Pearls) for something truly natural.
For an interesting read on dioxins and how it may contribute to endometriosis, check out http://www.endometriosisassn.org/environment.html. Dioxins are everywhere as they are used in the manufacture of many products, not just certain feminine care products so they are very hard to avoid.
Drion’s are on Sale this month of Feb. until middle March in honor of moving. You can get a 3 pack of Drion's for $25 dollars (any combination of regular and night liners with, 1 pack of day liners if so chosen, while supplies last). These are normally $30 for all three. Please note, Drions are only available at this price for pickup only at the clinic. I’m not in a position to deliver at the moment. Some of the products I would recommend are listed above.
4. Eat clean food
I would also strongly encourage any woman who consumes animal products to eat only clean meat, egg, and dairy foods, plus choosing spray-free and organic produce when possible. It is vitally important to avoid the excess hormones and chemicals often found in commercially produced dairy and meats. Fruits and vegetables are the same. If you eat organic, you will get more nutritional value from the foods, despite paying a little extra at times. Organic foods are grown on healthier soils and healthier soils create healthier foods that nourish our bodies better. If the cost of eating organic is an issue, then consider growing your own, or go to www.ewg.org and read about their “dirty dozen”, the crops that are the most heavily sprayed. Spoiler: The top six in order are apples, peaches, nectarines, strawberries, grapes, and celery. You can’t always wash the pesticides off certain foods like strawberries and peaches as their soft skin absorbs pesticides. At a minimum, only buy organic and spray-free produced listed on the “dirty dozen” so you can minimize the most extreme exposure. The good news is there is also the “clean 15” list, showing the least sprayed commercial fruits and vegetables.
5. Replenish key nutrients
With those with Endometriosis, there is often a nutritional deficiency in the body of one or more of these key nutrients: Magnesium, Vit. A, Vit. C, Vit. D, Fat, and Iodine. Now this info comes from an incredible acupuncturist and fertility specialist of 35+ years named Heather Bruce (www.HeatherSays.co.au). She has an amazing app on periods, available here. I had the privilege of working with Heather and in her practice she finds that usually supplementation with these key nutrients along with some of the other suggestions listed in this article are key to healing. It is actually quite hard to heal endometriosis if these nutrients are low, even despite surgeries, as surgeries remove the diseased tissue but don’t often address why these tissues were growing where they shouldn’t in the first place. Check with a holistic chiropractor (like my partner Sam (http://tenpointwellness.com/contact-2/)), holistic acupuncturist, holistic osteopath, naturopath, or holistic medical doctor to get nutritional analysis, whether it’s through functional testing via the blood, urine, hair, or saliva, or through extensive case history and symptom surveys.
The body will have a harder time healing without key nutrients like iodine in sufficient supply in the body. Tragically, iodine is hard to get here in New Zealand as it’s a key ingredient to the underground meth industry, so iodine has become regulated. In other parts of the world, Sudafed has been the component of meth that has been regulated instead of iodine. The liquid iodine you see in some of the health food shops is notoriously weak, even clear colored. Iodine should be a dark, almost rust in color, not clear. However, if you can get access to real iodine, known as Lugol’s iodine, I would suggest painting it on your skin over your belly for a period of several months. However, just keep in mind that if you are selenium deficient (or in Selenium excess-this is extremely rare) you won’t be able to absorb the iodine and what’s worse you can get severe Hashimoto’s like symptoms, which will feel really bad. Again, work with a holistic chiropractor, holistic acupuncturist, holistic osteopath, naturopath, or holistic medical doctor that understands the importance of iodine, and you may require testing to check your selenium levels and/or your iodine levels.
If you choose to take iodine internally you may need to do a good Bromide/Halide detox first to avoid uncomfortable detox reactions. Here’s a good website on that topic: http://jeffreydachmd.com/2014/03/iodine-bromine-detox-unrefined-salt-jeffrey-dach-md/
However, for myself (I am not selenium deficient) I find painting iodine on my body the most comfortable way to absorb iodine as I’ve had a Bromide/Halide detox before and it’s very unpleasant and includes symptoms such as painful body rashes, swollen tongue and emotional instability. Please contact my partner Sam (http://tenpointwellness.com/contact-2/) if you want to order iodine, but you’ll first have to make a consultation appointment, as you need to make sure you are not reactive to iodine. Iodine testing is also available.
A little known fact, is Magnesium too should be applied topically as it’s more easily and efficiently absorbed through the skin. If it burns when placed on the skin, it either means you are a) extremely magnesium deficient, and/or b) you have chemical and/or heavy metal toxicity built up in the tissues. You can dilute the magnesium in a 1:1 ration with water to help with the burning but the burning should go away after two weeks. If it does not then you most certainly will want to do a heavy metal cleanse as the body can’t detox properly without magnesium and no matter how much magnesium you take or apply your body will not use it efficiently with heavy metals and toxins in the body.
Can you begin to see how toxic chemical build up and vitamin deficient along with internal stagnation maybe contributing to endometriosis?
6: Be mindful of hormone-based birth control that has high levels of estrogen
If you are on hormonal birth controls for the management of endometriosis symptoms, make sure your doctor has you on a low estrogen variety. Adding even more estrogen with birth control pills can make the endometriosis worse especially by the time you come off the pill. Most doctors do put their endometriosis clients on low estrogen and non-estrogen birth control pills, but it’s always good to check. Just remember the birth control pill is only masking the symptoms, not address the root cause of endometriosis so consider the other options listed in this article to help. Note: Only licensed medical doctors can change your prescriptions so please consult with them about changing your hormone-based birth control. Some countries allow specially trained fertility nurses to also monitor and prescribe hormone-based birth control, so please do your homework.
7. Do Castor Oil Packs
Castor packs maybe helpful in assisting the healing of endometriosis. Castor applied externally is an age old remedy for many ailments, especially in healing areas of pain and growths in the body. I have even heard stories and seen pictures of women who passed their actual endometriosis after doing several castor packs along with Self-care massage, and nutrition. A ‘castor pack’ is applying castor oil with a cloth layer (cotton or wool) to the skin, then applying a heat source on top of the cloth like a hot water bottle. Wherever you apply the oil it raises the body’s immunity and brings in more helper cells to help clean up an area. Castor permeates up to 4 inches into the body and its effects last for up to 7 to 14 hours after applying the pack. It’s a powerful simple home remedy indeed. Make sure to use only organic and hexane free castor oil and always discontinue use if any adverse side effects happen like rash. I now carry castor oil kits in the clinic, including cloth and instructions. These castor oil kits are only for clients that come to the clinic and are not available to be shipped at this time.
8: Do Vaginal/Pelvic Steams
Consider doing vaginal/pelvic steams as part of your care routine. Contrary to what some critics of steaming say, and I’m pretty sure those critics have not done a proper steam themselves (I’ve asked a few with silence as my reply…), there are many benefits to steaming and some of those benefits can help address endometriosis. Steaming is incredibly nourishing, very gentle and acts like a uterine levage, which means the steam helps the uterus cleanse itself by encouraging old lining and any other non-helpful material, such as endometriosis, to leave.
Do the steams with care when addressing endometriosis, because when endometriosis is present there is often heat and inflammation already in the area and steaming introduces more heat. However, when combined with particularly cleansing herbs and done correctly the steams can help support the healing of endometriosis. Examples of good herbs to use are yellow dock, dandelion, and clover. However, most green herbs traditionally used for steaming will be very cleansing. Some basic safety precautions are do not steam when there is active infection, and never use essential oils. Also, never steam when pregnant nor during menstruation. Please read my blogpost on steaming first before doing a steam: http://www.elizabethstherapeuticmassage.com/news--happenings/blog-post-vaginal-steams-from-a-personal-and-historical-view-point
9: Learn and do Arvigo® Self-Care
Probably the most important thing to do when one has endometriosis is to keep up with your self-care routine, which includes the manual self-care learned from Arvigo® therapy plus incorporating all the holistic suggestions here. Remember, it probably took a while and an accumulation of several things for the endometriosis to set in, so it may take some time to address the issue and walk back into health.
The Self-care technique learned during each regular initial session is one of the most powerful ways to aid the body in healing especially combined with good nutrition and lifestyle changes plus a good detox. Keep doing your self-care massage, and keep at the other suggestions listed above. After a few months you are sure to notice positive changes if not immediately.
